4: SOMEWHERE IN THE TIME OF BUTTERFLIES (THE OXFORD, SUNNYVALE, CALIF.)

by: Virginia Miller
In Silicon Valley’s town of Sunnyvale, The Oxford is a casual Indian-British gastropub where lamb shepherd’s pie and chicken tikka masala is served alongside fish and chips. Cocktails cut through rich, spicy dishes, like the popular house Oxford Mule (Earl Grey–infused Reyka vodka, house-made ginger-lime elixir and Jamaican bitters). But it’s the Somewhere in the Time of Butterflies that sneaks up quietly with an elegant punch. Soft and frothy with egg white, a touch of cream and an edible butterfly garnish served in a Champagne flute, this is actually a Bank Note scotch–based drink. Enhanced by a celery-rose-lime elixir and a dash of Bittercubeorange bitters, the cocktail is also subtly smoky.

A play on aloo tikki slider-style sandwiches, a popular North Indian street food, The Oxford in Sunnyvale takes their tall sliders in another direction with Dungeness crab cakes instead of veggie patties, served with mustard aioli.

Sunnyvale’s Murphy Avenue is practically an atlas of global cuisine: Italian to Indian, Persian to pub food. One of the hottest new restaurants in the South Bay, The Oxford, borrows from several of these cuisines for its menu focusing on more refined versions of London street food, with a particular focus on Middle Eastern and Indian specialties.

The Oxford occupies the former IC Lounge space, which was connected to Rasam’s, a fine-dining restaurant serving modern Hindustani cuisine. Rasam’s is still there for private functions, but the lounge has been rebooted into a full-blown restaurant, its once-stilted vibe now more casual and fun.

When we arrived one Friday evening, it was like walking into a restaurant version of Piccadilly Circus — vibrant, loud and dining area were filled with millennials (and a few families), the space decorated brightly with a mural of British iconography such as Big Ben, red phone booths and a Rolling Stones album cover…

The Oxford Spotlight: London Street Food Found in Sunnyvale

The Oxford had a vision of bringing Middle Eastern, Southeast Asian, Indian and English flavors to the table in a lively atmosphere to emulate a British Gastropub. It did just that. Our takeaway from this four-month-old restaurant in the smack of downtown Sunnyvale is creativity at its finest. We’re talking kale chips dipped in chickpea batter and served with creamy taziki sauce. And a watermelon, beetroot, goat cheese salad sprinkled with greens and olive dust. Oh, and the cocktails with aromatic basil or ground coffee beans floating on top so that smells take over your senses before the first sip. Every plate had exploding flavor profiles.

The Oxford
While primarily influenced by London street food, the menu at the Oxford also draws on Middle Eastern, Asian, Indian and North African fare. In the few months it’s been open, the falafel sliders with mint tahini yogurt ($10) and burger with housemade pickles ($15) have been especially popular. Of course, you can also get a platter of beer-battered fish and chips ($14).
Power Move: Most of the syrups, sodas and elixirs are prepared in-house. The bartenders pride themselves on creating concoctions based on a guest’s preferred flavor profiles; be sure to let them know yours. 195 S. Murphy Ave., Sunnyvale, 408.245.8503

11 Hottest Restaurants and Bars in the South Bay

British fare gets the California treatment at this downtown Sunnyvale gastropub known for hearty, midpriced starters and flat-screen TVs.
Must-order: Fish ‘n’ chips; chicken shawarma turnovers; the rum- and walnut-driven Cyprus cocktail.

Insider Tip: The gastropub label is truly appropriate — The Oxford is one of the very few restaurants to truly embrace the diverse flavors of London street food on its menu, which goes well beyond pub grub. The most rewarding experience is sharing typical British classics with the more unique, harder-to-find dishes from London’s immigrant community.

THE OXFORD GASTROPUB OPENS TODAY IN SILICON VALLEY

POSTED BY THE FOOD PATROL

On historic Murphy Avenue in Sunnyvale, London is calling. The exciting new gastropub, The Oxford, has opened downtown, serving sophisticated food and drink inspired by the eclectic, energetic verve of the streets of London.

GRAND OPENING – ‘’GARDEN IN A GLASS”

The grand opening kicks off 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 7 with “Garden in a Glass,” when folks are invited to bring in their fruits, vegetables and fresh herbs from the Farmers Market to the The Oxford’s bartender who will incorporate them into a distinctive cocktail – The sky is the limit! Enjoy a sugar snap pea Tom Collins to a cilantro and pepper tequila gimlet or old fashioned. Cocktails will be served with complimentary samplings from the restaurant’s menu. From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., The Oxford will be pouring wine at the Magic of Sunnyvale & Wine Stroll on Murphy Avenue followed by an official ribbon cutting at the restaurant at 5 p.m. with cocktails, appetizers and live music.

The celebration continues on Mother’s Day, May 8, with a special brunch, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; a classic afternoon tea, 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (one seating, reservations required); and a Sunday Supper Roast, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (reservations required).

GASTROPUB IN SILICON VALLEY

The modern-day pub features an expansive bar, wood wainscoting, vintage-style caged Edison lights, and classic white subway tiles in homage to the London Underground. The colorful wall art pays tribute to London’s most famed cultural touchstones, including the Beatles, the Clash, Princess Diana, Beefeaters, and Big Ben.

The playful dishes — sized from bites (“small fellows’’) to mains (“big fellows’’) — emphasize California sensibilities with the use of local, seasonal and often organic ingredients from Zuckerman’s Farm, Iacopi Farms, Panorama Baking Company, and Mary’s Chicken.

The international flavors of the streets of London come alive in dishes such as falafel sliders with mint tahini yogurt ($10); roasted chickpea hummus topped with lamb kabob ($11); grilled cheddar cheese on Panorama sourdough slathered with red onion jam ($12); beer-battered fish and chips with pickled ramp tartar sauce ($14); and the Oxford burger with house-made pickles ($15). Desserts include an English-style, bruleed brioche bread pudding with brandy-soaked raisins, almonds and cherry ice cream ($7).

CLASSIC & CONTEMPORARY COCKTAILS
CRAFT BEERS ~ BOUTIQUE WINES

Both classic and contemporary cocktails are spotlighted, including originals such as the Yamato Sling #3 ($8), made with Broker’s Gin, sake, Vanilla-Ceylon Elixir Green Tea, and Blackstrap Bitters; and The Bluejay ($9), a unique blend of Mexican lager, Fidencio Classico Mezcal, grapefruit, lime and Bittercube Jamaican #2 Bitters. In a nod to London’s long love affair with this botanical spirit, The Oxford also boasts seven gin cocktails. A range of wines, including nine by the glass, also are offered, along with 24 beers, including half a dozen on tap.

LEADERSHIP, OUTDOOR PATIO & MORE

Managing Partner Rahul Nair, formerly of the Michelin two-starred Campton Place in San Francisco, oversees the 100-seat, family-friendly dining room that’s the perfect place for a quick bite or a leisurely meal. The 40-seat patio is especially pooch-accommodating, complete with house-made dog treats that can be ordered.

Located at 195 S. Murphy Ave. The Oxford is open for dinner Monday through Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday from 4:30 p.m. to midnight. Parking is available on the street and in a free lot behind the restaurant.

BAGPIPES, ANYONE?

To the thrill of party goers (and passersby) The Oxford’s Opening Party featured bagpipers and drummers in full Scottish kilts, playing a mini concert inside and then spontaneously performing in the street.
